Abstract
According to the social justice model of disability, inclusion is about securing civil and human rights for individuals with disabilities. To that end, supported decision-making is a person-centred process that allows individuals to take control of their own choices and increases their ability to live selfdetermined lives. Utilizing a case-study approach, this chapter examines the differences between guardianship and supported decision-making and explores how one individual who had been placed within a guardianship format, embraced a more supported decision-making framework through selfselecting a group of family, friends and professionals to serve in an advisory capacity. Through this approach, he regained control of decision-making, assumed the ‘dignity of risk’ associated with decision-making and restored his right to self-determination. .

I find it troubling that in the K 12 educational system, we have long advocated for inclusion for individuals with disabilities, but we do not actively promote the idea that we need to give full civil rights to students with disabilities. If

I was first intro- duced to guardianship and alternatives to guardianship at a major the national disability rights network conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. This was the first time that I was introduced to the problems of the guardianship system in the United States. Supported decision-making is an alternative to guardianship that places an individual in control of his or her life by making decisions with the support of others. Supported decision-making, therefore, is a person-centred process that allows individuals to take control of their own choices and increases their ability to live self-determined lives

I am not arguing that everyone should live an inde- pendent life. However, I do believe that each person needs to be able to live a life that is as independent as possible, with the supports necessary to succeed. In reality, I have come to believe that no one is really independent

How is he able to make stuff happen in his life? John has a group of individuals, who have agreed to serve as his supported decision-making team. This includes remote relatives, paid-supports, volunteer coordinators, friends and an attorney. He utilizes this team to make all significant decisions in his life. Ultimately, however, he has the final word in the decision- making process. At the end of the day, he is in control of his own path and assumes the dignity of risk associated with his decisions

I believe in the power of communities in people making decisions together for the betterment of all. Because I also recognize that some individuals may have difficulty with making certain decisions in their lives and experiencing inclusion, I would argue that supported decision-making, when implemented properly, is a strategy that allows for both self-determined personal outcomes and the creation of communities of belonging
