From the 4th century

Before a Saint

  • was a slave for an Egyptian and was banished for allegedly murdering someone
  • become a ring leader for a group of criminals
    • notorious for murderes and robberies

Transitioning

  • Hid in a monastery and after witnessing their life wanted to become a monk
  • The monks said no because they thought he just wanted to escape from the authorirties
  • He was so dedicated he lived in a solitary cell and committed to prayer and fasting
  • Got admitted and was in obedience to the abbott
  • 4 robbers tried to attack his cell, but he was still strong.
    • Beat them up and took them to the other monks to decide their fate
    • They repented and entered into the monastic lifestyle

As a monk

  • Moses had a hard time transitioning to monastic life and discussed it often with the abbott
    • The lesson the abbott gave was at sunrise: The sun doesn’t erase darkness all at once, and Jesus may take time to erase the darkness in our lives as well
  • Vision of demons in west and angels in the east, ready to battle
    • St. Issador explained that In the end, good will win out
  • Had a job of taking water to monks
    • once while getting water he was hit on the back of a head by demons
    • This was explained as he had power over demons and the only thing that could happen to him was being physically attacked as the devil had no power on his soul

A Deacon

  • because of his obedience and faithfulness, he as ordained a deacon
  • had to be tested by a bishop
    • The bishop forbade him to enter due to being an Ethiopian
    • Moses walked away without a word and because of that reaction was immediately ordained a priest
  • During Lent, the Abbott forbade people to eat
    • Moses had guests and cooked for them
    • Other monks went and told the abbott
    • The abbott saw the food was for the guests and St. Moses was commended for his hospitality
  • He was asked to judge the penance of someone and originally he refused. After being convinced to do so, he showed up with a bag of sand on his back with a hole that slowly leaked sand. The others said why are you doing that? And he said that the sand was his sin, and he doesn’t see the trail it leaves behind, yet he was there to judge the sin of someone who’s sin was put on full display? The man was pardoned
  • At 75 he had a vision that the monastery would be overrun by robbers, and decided to stay behind (despite others saying not to). He said it was fitting that he would die by the sword as he had used the sword to kill others. 7 monks stayed behind with him. St. Moses and 6 monks were killed while the 7th hid and shared what had happened.

An example of nonviolence, repentance, and humility

What to learn? Holiness is gradual and life long St. Moses never stopped growing in holiness
